A Red light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor light source. LED's are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting. It looks like a white led and illuminate's blue light. When a light-emitting diode is switched on, electrons are able to recombine with holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons. This effect is called electroluminescence and the colour of the light (corresponding to the energy of the photon) is determined by the energy bandgap of the semiconductor.

FAQ

1. What voltage is required to operate a 3mm Red LED?

A typical 3mm red LED operates at a forward voltage of about 1.8V–2.2V and usually requires around 20mA of current for normal brightness. A current-limiting resistor should be used in series to prevent damage to the LED.

2. How can I identify the positive and negative terminals of the LED?

The longer lead of the LED is the anode (positive) and the shorter lead is the cathode (negative). The flat edge on the LED casing also typically indicates the cathode side.

3. What are the common applications of a 3mm Red LED?

3mm red LEDs are widely used in Arduino projects, breadboard circuits, electronic indicators, DIY electronics, robotics projects, and educational experiments due to their compact size and low power consumption.
