The Force Sensor 0.5" 14.7mm – Circular is a thin, flexible Force Sensitive Resistor (FSR) designed to detect and measure changes in applied force, pressure, and touch intensity. The sensor features a circular active sensing area of approximately 14.7mm diameter and works as a variable resistor whose resistance decreases as the applied force increases.

The sensor uses Polymer Thick Film (PTF) technology and has a simple two-terminal resistive interface. When no force is applied, the resistance is very high. As pressure is applied to the circular sensing area, the resistance decreases, allowing the relative force level to be measured using a simple voltage-divider circuit connected to a microcontroller's analog input.

With a useful force sensitivity range of approximately 0.2N to 20N, the sensor is suitable for touch controls, robotic grippers, pressure-sensitive buttons, wearable electronics, electronic musical instruments, occupancy detection, and human-machine interfaces. The thin and lightweight construction makes it easy to integrate into compact devices and surfaces where conventional mechanical force sensors may be too large.

The sensor can be used with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi with an external ADC, PIC, AVR, RP2040, and other controllers capable of reading analog voltage signals.

FAQ

1. What is the 0.5-inch 14.7mm Circular Force Sensor used for?

The sensor is used to detect touch, pressure, and changes in applied force. It is commonly used in robotics, pressure-sensitive buttons, wearable electronics, gaming controllers, grip detection, and human-machine interface projects.

2. How does the Circular Force Sensor work?

The sensor works as a force-sensitive variable resistor. When pressure is applied to the sensing area, its electrical resistance decreases. This resistance change can be converted into an analog voltage using a voltage-divider circuit.

3. Can the Force Sensor be connected to Arduino and ESP32?

Yes. The sensor can be connected to Arduino, ESP32, STM32, PIC, AVR, RP2040, and other controllers with analog input capability. A voltage-divider circuit is normally used to convert the resistance change into a measurable voltage.

4. Can this Force Sensor measure exact weight?

The sensor is primarily designed for detecting relative force and pressure changes rather than precision weight measurement. Calibration can provide approximate force values, but a load cell is generally more suitable for accurate weighing applications.

5. Does the Circular Force Sensor have positive and negative terminals?

No. The sensor is a non-polarized resistive device with two terminals. Either terminal can be used on either side of the voltage-divider circuit.
