The L293D is a popular Dual H-Bridge Motor Driver IC designed to control the direction and speed of DC motors and stepper motors using low-current control signals from microcontrollers. Featuring two independent H-Bridge driver circuits, the L293D can drive up to two DC motors simultaneously or one bipolar stepper motor.
The IC includes built-in flyback protection diodes, eliminating the need for external protection components when driving inductive loads. Operating with separate logic and motor supply voltages, the L293D allows low-voltage microcontrollers such as Arduino, ESP32, STM32, PIC, and Raspberry Pi to safely control higher-voltage motors.
Housed in a standard DIP-16 package, the L293D is widely used in robotics, automation systems, motor control projects, educational kits, and embedded electronics applications.
