The LED Display Module 4-in-1 Dot Matrix – MAX7219 is a large programmable LED display module consisting of four 8×8 LED dot matrix displays arranged side by side to create a 32×8 pixel display area. Each 8×8 matrix is controlled by a dedicated MAX7219 serially interfaced LED display driver, allowing the entire module to display scrolling text, numbers, symbols, animations, patterns, sensor readings, and other graphical information.

The MAX7219 driver handles LED multiplexing, current control, brightness adjustment, and display refreshing internally, significantly reducing the processing load and number of GPIO pins required from the microcontroller. The module uses a simple 3-wire serial interface consisting of DIN, CLK, and CS/LOAD signals, making it easy to control all four matrix sections using only a few microcontroller pins.

The four MAX7219 driver stages are connected in a daisy-chain configuration, allowing display data to pass from one section to the next. Multiple 4-in-1 modules can also be cascaded to create longer scrolling message boards and larger information displays. The module is widely used with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, RP2040, PIC, AVR, and other development platforms.
