
The LiteWing Drone Positioning Module is an advanced sensor expansion board designed to provide height hold, optical flow-based position hold, and stable indoor hovering for LiteWing drones and other compatible drone development platforms. The module combines the PMW3901 Optical Flow Sensor with the VL53L1X Time-of-Flight (ToF) Distance Sensor, enabling accurate ground movement detection and altitude measurement without relying on GPS. It is ideal for indoor flight, autonomous navigation, precision landing, and research applications where GPS signals are unavailable or unreliable.
The PMW3901 optical flow sensor continuously tracks the movement of surface textures beneath the drone by capturing and processing high-speed image data. By measuring the apparent motion of the ground, it provides accurate X and Y movement information that can be used by the flight controller to maintain a stable position during hovering. When combined with the VL53L1X laser ToF sensor, which accurately measures the distance between the drone and the ground, the system enables smooth altitude control and significantly improves flight stability at low to medium flying heights.
The module communicates with the flight controller using standard digital interfaces, making it easy to integrate with ESP32-based LiteWing drones, custom flight controllers, STM32 platforms, Raspberry Pi systems, and other embedded development boards. Its compact PCB design, lightweight construction, and low power consumption make it suitable for small drones where payload weight is critical. The onboard sensors work together to enhance autonomous flight performance, reduce drift, improve landing accuracy, and enable reliable indoor navigation.
