The RC522 RFID Card Reader Module – 13.56MHz is a compact, low-cost contactless RFID reader and writer module designed for identification, access control, attendance systems, authentication, and automation projects. The module is based on the MFRC522 RFID reader/writer IC and operates at the standard high-frequency RFID carrier frequency of 13.56MHz.

The module generates a 13.56MHz electromagnetic field through its onboard PCB antenna. When a compatible passive RFID card, tag, or key fob is placed near the reader, the tag receives power from the electromagnetic field and communicates its identification or stored data back to the module. The MFRC522 supports ISO/IEC 14443 Type A, MIFARE, and compatible NTAG transponders.

The RC522 module is most commonly interfaced with microcontrollers using the SPI communication interface. The MFRC522 IC itself also supports I²C and serial UART host interfaces, although common RC522 breakout boards are generally configured and used through SPI. The module provides fast communication, low power consumption, a compact PCB antenna, and short-range contactless reading suitable for embedded RFID applications.

The module is widely used with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, Raspberry Pi, RP2040, PIC, AVR, and other development platforms for electronic door locks, attendance machines, membership systems, smart cabinets, inventory tracking prototypes, and educational RFID projects.

FAQ

1. What is the RC522 RFID Card Reader Module used for?

The RC522 module is used for contactless RFID identification and data communication. It is commonly used in access control systems, attendance machines, electronic door locks, membership systems, authentication projects, and RFID-based automation.

2. What frequency does the RC522 RFID Module operate at?

The RC522 operates at a carrier frequency of 13.56MHz and supports compatible ISO/IEC 14443 Type A RFID cards and tags.

3. Can the RC522 module be used with Arduino and ESP32?

Yes. The RC522 can be used with Arduino, ESP32, ESP8266, STM32, Raspberry Pi, RP2040, PIC, AVR, and other controllers. SPI is the most commonly used communication interface on RC522 breakout modules.

4. Can the RC522 read and write RFID cards?

Yes. The MFRC522 is a reader/writer device and can read identification data and access memory on supported compatible writable RFID cards and tags. Actual write capability depends on the tag type, memory organization, authentication requirements, and access permissions.

5. Can the RC522 read 125kHz RFID cards and key fobs?

No. The RC522 operates at 13.56MHz and cannot communicate with 125kHz RFID tags such as standard EM4100 or EM4102 key fobs. A compatible 125kHz RFID reader is required for those tags.
