The Spectra Flex Sensor 2.2 Inch Bend Sensor for Hand Recognition is a flexible resistive sensor designed to detect bending, flexing, and angular movement. Manufactured using patented resistive flex-sensing technology from Spectra Symbol, the sensor changes its electrical resistance as it bends, allowing a microcontroller or analog measurement circuit to determine relative bend position and movement.

The sensor is approximately 2.2 inches (55.9mm) long and features a thin, lightweight, flexible construction suitable for mounting on fingers, gloves, robotic joints, and other moving surfaces. When the sensor is in a flat position, it has a nominal resistance specified by the particular model, and its resistance increases as the sensing area bends. The resistance response can be measured using a simple voltage divider circuit connected to the analog input of a microcontroller.

The Flex Sensor is particularly suitable for hand gesture recognition, sign language gloves, robotic hand control, virtual reality gloves, rehabilitation devices, motion tracking, and wearable electronics. Its simple two-terminal resistive interface makes it easy to use with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi with an ADC, PIC, AVR, and other development platforms.

FAQ

1. What is the Spectra Flex Sensor 2.2 Inch used for?

The sensor is used to detect bending and relative angular movement. It is commonly used in hand gesture recognition, sign language gloves, robotic hands, virtual reality controllers, wearable electronics, and rehabilitation devices.

2. How does the Flex Sensor detect bending?

The sensor works as a variable resistor. Its resistance changes as the sensing strip bends, and this resistance variation can be measured using a voltage divider circuit and a microcontroller's analog input.

3. Can the Flex Sensor be used for hand gesture recognition?

Yes. The sensor can be mounted along a finger or integrated into a glove. Multiple sensors can be used together to measure the bending of individual fingers for gesture recognition and robotic hand control.

4. Is the Flex Sensor compatible with Arduino and ESP32?

Yes. The sensor can be used with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, PIC, AVR, and other microcontrollers with analog input capability. A voltage divider circuit is normally used to convert the resistance change into a measurable voltage.

5. Can the Flex Sensor be bent in both directions?

The sensor should be installed and bent according to its recommended sensing direction for predictable resistance change. Repeated reverse bending, sharp folding, twisting, or bending near the terminal base should be avoided to prevent damage and inconsistent readings.
