The YF-S201 Water Flow Sensor is a Hall-effect-based liquid flow measurement sensor designed to measure the flow rate and total volume of water passing through a pipeline. The sensor consists of a plastic valve body, internal water rotor, permanent magnet, and Hall-effect sensor. When water flows through the sensor, the rotor rotates and the Hall-effect sensor generates electrical pulses proportional to the flow rate.

The YF-S201 provides a digital pulse output that can be counted by a microcontroller to calculate instantaneous water flow rate and accumulated water volume. Its typical measurement range is 1 to 30 litres per minute, and a commonly specified calibration relationship is approximately 450 pulses per litre, equivalent to a frequency relation of F = 7.5 × Q, where Q is the flow rate in litres per minute.

With its G1/2-inch threaded connections, compact construction, simple 3-wire interface, and compatibility with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, PIC, AVR, and other controllers, the YF-S201 is widely used in water monitoring systems, irrigation controllers, water dispensers, smart tanks, filtration systems, and IoT-based water management projects.

FAQ

1. What is the YF-S201 Water Flow Sensor used for?

The YF-S201 is used to measure water flow rate and total water volume in applications such as irrigation systems, water dispensers, smart water meters, filtration systems, tank monitoring, and IoT water management projects.

2. How does the YF-S201 Water Flow Sensor work?

Water passing through the sensor rotates an internal turbine rotor. A magnet attached to the rotor activates the Hall-effect sensor, producing electrical pulses that can be counted to calculate water flow rate and total volume.

3. Is the YF-S201 compatible with Arduino and ESP32?

Yes. The sensor can be used with Arduino, ESP32, STM32, Raspberry Pi, PIC, AVR, RP2040, and other controllers capable of reading and counting digital pulse signals.

4. What is the measurement range of the YF-S201?

The typical flow measurement range of the YF-S201 is 1 to 30 litres per minute. Measurement accuracy can vary depending on flow conditions, installation, water pressure, and sensor calibration.

5. Can the YF-S201 measure the total amount of water used?

Yes. By counting the output pulses over time, a microcontroller can calculate the total volume of water that has passed through the sensor. A typical calibration value is approximately 450 pulses per litre, although calibration is recommended for precision applications.
